In October 1980 Bruce Springsteen released The River, his fifth album, which would eventually earn him his first number one spot on the US Billboard 200 album charts. The double album was also the commercial breakthrough for springsteen in Germany. With The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, a box is now being released that gives a comprehensive insight into the Springsteen River era. In addition to 52 partially unpublished songs on four CDs, it also contains three DVDs (or four CDs and two Blu-Ray discs for the Blu-Ray edition) with four hours of never before shown video material. In addition to the original The River album, The Ties That Bind: The River Collection also includes the first official release of The River: Single Album, plus a CD with studio outtakes from 1979 and 1980, two DVDs with previously unpublished, new edited multi-camera footage of the famous 1980 Tempe, Arizona concert that has never been shown. There are also rare recordings of samples, a brand new documentary titled The Ties That Bind about the making of The River, and a coffee table book with 200 rare and unpublished photos and memorabilia, and an essay by Mikal Gilmore.

The River: Single Album is the ten-song album that Springsteen recorded in 1979 as a follow-up to Darkness On The Edge Of Town, but never released. "The songs lacked the consistency and conceptual intensity that I expect from my music. So I went back to the studio," wrote Bruce Springsteen in his lyrics / photo book Songs. The original sessions were the beginning of a very productive, eighteen-month songwriting and recording phase. Seven of the ten tracks on the "Single Album" finally found their way onto The River's double album, some with alternative lyrics and arrangements. The outtake of the song "Cindy" and the rockabilly version of "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)" have never been released before.

The fourth CD of the box set is titled The River: Outtakes and covers the entire The River sessions that took place in 1979 and 1980. Eleven of the recordings are absolute rarities that have never been published before. The existence of most is not even known to the fans. Eleven further outtakes (Record Two) come from the Tracks Box and the Essentials Compilation and now combine all recordings on a sound carrier for the first time.

The Ties That Bind is a brand new 60 minute documentary directed by Thom Zimny. It contains an interview with Springsteen, in which he talks about the The River songwriting and studio phase. In between there are concert footage from that time and rare photos of Bruce and the band. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980 is the recording of a concert that was professionally filmed with four cameras. The film of the appearance in Tempe includes 24 songs on two DVDs. The concert is considered one of the best in Springsteen's career and includes early live versions of over half of The River songs. Add to that twenty minutes of footage from Springsteen and The E Street Band's rehearsals for The River Tour 1980.
