What Hits !? Covers the more or less great hits of the Red Hot Chili Peppers from the early years until the release of their success album Blood Sugar Sex Magik from 1991. The earliest songs are partly live recordings from concerts, but also veritable video clips with sometimes quite complex animations (for example in "Behind The Sun"). The clips convince less by artistic direction, than by tempo, anarchic fun and, above all, much color.

Those who got to know the band only from their comeback success Californication of 1999, will hardly believe that the Californians had actually sold quite a few records with this crazy madness. The eccentric appearance of Kiedis and Co., however, slightly misleads the fact that four hard-working musicians under the whirling, half-naked dervishes on the stage concealed their instruments perfectly. Unlike in the later years, the sound of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their first albums was a hard crossover of Punkrock with very heavy played radio rhythms. But there were also melodic songs like "Show Me Your Soul" from the soundtrack to Pretty Woman or "Under The Bridge", the biggest hit of the band, which brought it the international breakthrough.

Although the music videos tend to boost the sale of the records, some of these clips are totally unsuitable for the public, such as the provocative clip to "Catholic Schoolgirls Rule" or the Livemit section of their Hendrix cover "Fire" With the band wearing their famous socks (and nothing else). With no clip (apart from the rather gloomy "Under The Bridge"), the band is particularly serious and convinced by the music. Peppers' new album: the genius cover version of the Stevie Wonder classic "Higher Ground" from the 89er album Mother's Milk.
