By the end of the 70s progressive rock was an all but forgotten style of music, consigned to history by giants such as Yes and Genesis. However, in the early 1980s a new breed of prog-rock band began to emerge from Britain and leading from the front was IQ. Featuring the original 1982 line-up of Peter Nicholls, Mike Holmes, Paul Cook, Tim Esau and Martin Orford, their performance was filmed at the Camden Palace, London for the Live From London series. Still active today and regarded as one of the world's most respected prog-rock bands, this DVD includes the hits Outer Limits, The Magic Roundabout and Widow's Peak. The measure of a band's success should not be considered purely on commercial recognition or albums sales but also on longevity and popularity. For this reason, IQ can rightfully be recognised as one of the world's most successful prog-rock bands of recent times. Formed in 1981, it wasn't until the following year that the band's line-up was finally cemented, featuring Peter Nicholls on lead vocals, Mike Holmes on guitar, drummer Paul Cook, Tim Esau on bass and Martin Orford on keyboards. Seven Stories Into Eight was their first release, and though not a chart sensation it did secure them a regular spot at London's famous Marquee Club. By 1985 IQ had released two more albums, Tales From The Lush Attic (1983) and The Wake (1985), the latter considered by many as their best work. However, the year also saw growing tensions within the band spill over resulting in the departure of Peter Nicholls. With his replacement, Paul (P.L.) Menel, the band headlined at London Piccadilly Theatre before securing a record deal with Phonogram. Their new studio albums introduced a change in style as IQ moved towards a more mainstream sound on Nomzamo (1987) and Are You Sitting Comfortably? in 1989. The albums were promoted with an extensive European tour but once again failed to attract the desired sales. Peter Nicholls return for the 1993 release Ever also saw the band return to a more familiar prog-rock style, once again taking to the road in the UK, Europe and North America. The following years saw personnel changes and a natural maturing of IQ's sound. Recently the band has continued to release new material, including 2009's Frequency , and still enjoy playing live to a dedicated legion of fans.
