The Early Years 1965–1972 is a compilation box set by Pink Floyd released on 11 November 2016. It was officially announced 28 July 2016. The set includes seven volumes with CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, vinyl, and memorabilia. It contains early non-album singles plus unreleased studio and live recordings. Volumes 1–6 will be available for individual sale as of March 24th 2017, while Volume 7 Continu/ation will be exclusive to the box set. A two-disc compilation titled The Early Years – Cre/ation was also made available.

On 5 November 2016, the official Pink Floyd Facebook page announced that the set would also include another extra disc—Live at Pompeii on CD. This was due to an error where the Pompeii CD had been placed inside the 1972: Obfusc/ation box instead of the 2016 mix of the Obscured by Clouds album. This meant that the Obscured by Clouds album had to be included separately in a plastic wallet; the reverse of the wallet states "Replacement CD disc for Obfusc/ation [...] (Stereo 2016 mix of Pink Floyd 'Live at Pompeii' CD supplied in error)"

Pink Floyd sind tief in ihr riesiges Musikarchiv eingetaucht, bis zurück an den frühen Beginn ihrer Karriere, um ein 27-Disc-Deluxe-Boxset in sieben individuellen, in Buchform gestalteten Hüllen zu produzieren, das bisher nie veröffentlichtes Material enthält.

Das Box-Set wird Aufnahmen für das Fernsehen, BBC-Sessions, unveröffentlichte Tracks, Outtakes und Demos mit einer gesamten Spielzeit von unglaublichen 12 Stunden und 33 Minuten Audio (mit insgesamt 130 Tracks) und mehr als 15 Stunden Videomaterial umfassen. Dazu gehören mehr als 20 unveröffentlichte Songs und sieben Stunden vorher nie veröffentlichtes Live-Audiomaterial plus fünf Stunden rares Konzert-Footage sowie mehrere akribisch produzierte 7-Zoll-Singles in authentisch nachgebildeten Hüllen, Erinnerungsstücke für Sammler, Feature-Films und neue Soundmixe. Unter den zuvor nicht veröffentlichten Tracks befinden sich auch Vegetable Man von 1967 und In The Beechwoods, die für diese Veröffentlichung neu abgemischt wurden.

"The Early Years 1965 – 1972" wird Sammlern die Gelegenheit geben, die Evolution der Band von ihren frühesten Aufnahmen an bis zu den Sessions in den Jahren vor "The Dark Side Of The Moon", eines der meistverkauften Alben aller Zeiten, nachzuvollziehen und zu verfolgen, wie Pink Floyd ihren Anteil zu einer kulturellen Revolution beitrugen. Von der Single "Arnold Layne" bis hin zum 20-minütigen Epos "Echoes" können die Fans die Erfindung des Psychedelic Progressiv Rock verfolgen. Die aufschlussreiche Kollektion erkundet die Pink Floyd-Story von der Zeit an, als Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason und Syd Barrett an der Londoner Regent Street Polytechnic aufeinandertrafen, bis Syd Barrett die Band verließ und David Gilmour das ikonische Line-Up vervollständigte.

Überblick über die Einzelsegmente:

1965-1967 CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION
Das erste Segment befasst sich mit der Syd Barrett-Phase der Band, von den Demos vor der Verbindung mit EMI über die Non-Album-Hitsingles und die dazugehörigen Tracks bis hin zu bisher unveröffentlichten Songs, wie die neu gemixten Vegetable Man und In The Beechwoods, und den BBC-Session-Aufnahmen. Pink Floyd haben für die Box zusätzlich die Tapes von einem unveröffentlichten Konzertmitschnitt in Stockholm aus dem Jahr 1967 besorgt. Die DVD/Blu-ray zeigt unter anderem historische TV-Auftritte sowie eigenes Filmmaterial von Pink Floyd.

1968 GERMIN/ATION
Dieser Teil spürt der Zeit unmittelbar nach dem Ausstieg von Syd Barrett nach, als Pink Floyd noch immer Singles komponierten und gleichzeitig ihren ureigenen, einzigartigen, eher instrumental ausgerichteten Stil entwickelten. Es gibt einige Non-Album-Singleveröffentlichungen zu hören, außerdem eine jüngst aufgespürte Session aus den Capitol Records Studios in Los Angeles, weitere BBC-Sessions und andere Tracks.
Die DVD/Blu-ray enthält den kürzlich restaurierten Promo-Clip zu Point Me At The Sky, einige internationale TV-Auftritte und eine Auswahl von Songmaterial aus weiteren TV-Shows.

1969 DRAMATIS/ATION
Im Jahre 1969 enthüllten PINK FLOYD ihre zweiteilig konzipierte Live-Produktion von "The Man" und "The Journey", die eine 24-stündige Zeitspanne von Träumen, Aufwachen und anderen Aktivitäten umfasst. Das Werk wurde nie in dieser Form veröffentlicht, wenn auch einige der Songs auf dem Soundtrack "More" und dem Album "Ummagumma" benutzt wurden. Dieser Teil der Box blickt zurück auf die Tour zu "The Man" und "The Journey" und präsentiert Live-Performances aus Amsterdam und Performances für die BBC London, enthält aber auch die Bonustracks aus dem "More"-Soundtrack, die im Film, aber nicht auf dem Album zu hören waren. Außerdem gibt es Non-Album-Tracks wie eine frühe Version von Embryo aus dem Harvest-Sampler "Picnic". Das Videomaterial zeigt 20 Minuten aus den Proben zu "The Man"/"The Journey" in der Royal Festival Hall unter der Regie von Anthony Stern. Unter den Aufnahmen finden sich Afternoon (Biding My Time), The Beginning (Green Is The Colour), Cymbaline, Beset By Creatures Of The Deep und The End Of The Beginning (der letzte Teil von "A Saucerful Of Secrets") sowie weiteres Performance-Footage aus jenem Jahr.

1970 DEVI/ATION
Ende 1969 und zu Beginn des Jahres 1970 nahmen Pink Floyd ihren Beitrag zu Michelangelo Antonionis differenzierter Perspektive auf die US-Gesellschaft mit dem Titel ‚Zabriskie Point' auf und mixten ihn. Drei Songs wurden auf dem Soundtrack veröffentlicht und vier weitere erschienen auf der erweiterten 4 CD-Edition aus dem Jahr 1997. Vorher nie auf einer Pink Floyd CD veröffentlicht, versammelt dieses Segment remixte und ergänzte Versionen des ‚Zabriskie Point'-Audiomaterials.
Im selben Jahr erreichten Pink Floyd ihre erste Album-Nummer-1 im UK, "Atom Heart Mother", eine Kooperation mit Ron Geesin. Die Aufnahmen enthalten die erste Performance für die BBC mit Orchester und Chor sowie den Original Quadrophonie-Mix auf einer DVD.
Das Videomaterial präsentiert eine volle Stunde PINK FLOYD beim Auftritt im TV-Sender KQED in San Francisco und Auszüge aus historischen Aufführungen von "Atom Heart Mother" sowie Material des französischen Fernsehens aus einem Bericht zum St. Tropez-Festival in Südfrankreich.

1971 REVERBER/ATION
1971 nahmen Pink Floyd das Album "Meddle" mit dem eine LP-Seite langen Echoes auf, das von vielen als Grundlagenarbeit für "The Dark Side Of The Moon" betrachtet wird und daher ein höchst wichtiger Bestandteil des PINK FLOYD-Kanons ist.
Dieser Teil der Box bietet Teile der Originaldemos, als sich das Projekt von "Nichts" bis zur "Rückkehr des Sohnes von Nichts" entwickelte sowie eine damals entstandene BBC Session-Aufnahme.
Das Audio bzw. Videomaterial enthält den originalen, unveröffentlichten Mix von Echoes, aber auch Live-Material aus dem Jahr 1971, darunter Songs, die mit Roland Petit und seiner Marseille Ballet Company aufgeführt wurden.

1972 OBFUSC/ATION
Im Jahre 1972 reisten PINK FLOYD nach Hérouville, nördlich von Paris, um dort in den Strawberry Studios, die im Chateau des Städtchens ansässig waren, Aufnahmen zu machen. In bemerkenswerten zwei Wochen komponierten sie eines ihrer geschlossensten Alben und nahmen es dort auch auf: "Obscured By Clouds", den Soundtrack zu Barbet Schroeders "La Vallée". 1972 wurde auch "Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii" veröffentlicht, ein Film unter der Regie Adrian Mabens, der die Band zeigt, wie sie ohne Publikum im historischen Römischen Amphitheater in Pompeji performen. Das Videomaterial enthält Ausschnitte aus dem Film "Live In Pompeji" in neu editierten 5.1 Audiomixen, außerdem damaliges Material aus dem französischen Fernsehen sowie Live-Mitschnitte aus dem Konzert im Brighton Dome im Jahr 1972 und weitere Performances mit der Roland Petit Ballet Company.

CONTINU/ATION (nur im 'The Early Years 1965-1972' Box-Set) Eine Bonus-CD/DVD/Blu-ray-Sammlung mit einer CD mit frühen BBC Radio-Sessions, den Audiotracks aus dem Film ‚,The Committee", dem Live-Soundtrack von PINK FLOYD zur Mondlandung der NASA im Jahr 1969 und vielem mehr.
