Metallica is an American metal band. It was founded in Los Angeles in 1981 and has been based in San Francisco since 1982. It is one of the most successful metal bands in the world and has sold more than 110 million albums. In the USA alone, the band sold more than 62 million albums, making it the seventh-most successful artist group in the country. Metallica was awarded a Grammy Award nine times.

Alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, Metallica was one of the "great four" of Thrash Metal in the 1980s and is considered to be the most influential metal band of this decade. During the 1990s, Metallica opened up new musical influences such as Bluesrock and other rock styles, appealing to a broader audience and irritating their previous fans, before the band returned to their musical roots from 2002 onwards.
