Dazu kommen bombastische Chöre und Refrains, die endlich wieder die rockige Wucht bieten, die ICED EARTH einst so berühmt machten. Das neunminütige 'Clouding' ist solch ein Stück, der furiose Titeltrack von "Framing Armageddon" sowie die erste Single 'Ten Thousand Strong' ebenso.

Dazu ist die Scheibe ein Konzept-Album mit einer Geschichte aus der Ideekiste von Ufologen á la Erich von Däniken: Danach stammen die Menschen aus dem All und mussten nach einem Weltraum-Kampf in der Sahara notlanden. Nun sind Aliens aber nicht blöd und haben außerirdische Agenten eingesetzt, die Religion und verschiedene Sprachen brachten: So ist die einst geeinte Menschheit nun getrennt, bekämpft sich gegenseitig, ihre Technik liegt unter meterhohen Sandschichten begraben. Und die Aliens versuchen weiter alles, dass die Menschheit sich nicht mehr vereint ... harter Tobak? Ja. Und er soll laut ICED EARTH weiter fortgesetzt werden, ein zweiter Teil zur aktuellen Scheibe ist angekündigt. Doch was macht solches Geschwurbel drumherum, wenn die eigentliche Musik so abwechslungsreich klingt wie auf dieser Scheibe? Rund 65 Minuten dauert das Werk, das sich allerdings auch ein paar Kritikpunkte gefallen lassen muss: Es gibt zu viele Intros. Es sind zwar nicht so viele wie bei MANOWAR, und sie sind gerade noch so ausgetüftelt, dass sie nicht allzu sehr nerven. Doch in diesem Punkt wäre weniger mehr gewesen. Ansonsten haben sich ICED EARTH mit einer reifen Leistung zurückgemeldet - und Tim Owens kann endlich wieder zeigen, dass er einer der besten Sänger dieses Planeten ist.such as "Snake Devil," showcase the band's musical virtuosity.

Produced by Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Good Charlotte) in North Hollywood, California, Scary Kids Scaring Kids is a landmark release for a band who spend most of the year living on the road. "I think we really had time to make this album sound exactly the way we wanted to and focus on every track individually," explains Afkary. "In the past, we've been so limited with time, but with this disc we could really focus on the small details that made a big difference to us." This is most evident in the introductory "Prelude" and carefully constructed transitions between songs, facts that might not seem major on the surface but ultimately help Scary Kids Scaring Kids like an album as opposed to a collection of songs haphazardly thrown together.

Lyrically, Scary Kids Scaring Kids is essentially a quest for the truth in its most organic form, something that the band explore in-depth over the course of these 16 tracks. "It's all about reaching deep within and pulling out who you truly are," Afkary explains, adding that although there's a healthy amount of political dissent inherent in the disc, these tracks manage to express universal themes without sounding preachy or dogmatic
