Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard primary songwriters Ryan Key and Pete Mosely moved to New
York City to clear their heads and begin writing the songs which would constitute
their new album, Lights and Sounds, which will be released on January 24, 2006.
Lights and Sounds is a bigger, broader album that finds Yellowcard moving away
from songs about breakups and onto more expansive themes of artifice, war, and
adulthood. The guitars are tougher, the songs more intricate and encompassing a
wider spectrum of musical styles. From the title track, "Lights And Sounds," which
explodes with the relentless drumming of Longineu Parsons III and a buzzing guitar
attack to the soft, grandiose "How I Go," featuring a 25-piece orchestra conducted
by violinist Sean Mackin, Lights And Sounds is a huge leap for Yellowcard.
Although the album isn't due in stores until January 24th, the lead single,
"Lights And Sounds," premiered simultaneously as a stream on the band's website
and on Electronic Arts' Burnout Revenge game in September and has recently been
added to more than 40 Modern Rock stations nationwide. Its video premiered
simultaneously on MTV2 and Yahoo! Music. Yellowcard launched a U.S. club tour on

Among the more obvious selections found on this CD are Sergio Mendes' "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)", Cal Tjader's "Cuchy Frito Man", Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery's "OGD (Road Song)", and Astrud Gilberto's "Light My Fire". However, there are also some enjoyable surprises. Those "in the know" will doubtlessly appreciate and smile at the inclusion of Chico Hamilton's "For Mods Only". Smart, yet unexpected choices include Cal Tjader's Asian-influenced "The Fakir" (record hounds should keep your eyes open for the 45 - it's a treat and not too difficult to score), Richie Havens' "Something Else Again", and "Hard Latin" by Kenyon Hopkins. "Sounds From the Verve Hi-Fi" begins at a nice loungey pace and builds up to the Chico Hamilton track as it's danceable peak, before coming back down with Wynton Kelly's "Escapade" and finishing with the wonderful smokey vocal "Do It the Hard Way" to sip your nightcap to. Forget Steve White and Alan Barnes, the real story of The Jazz Renegades was vocalist Sarah Jane-Morris. There's no denying the value of a compilation choc-full of killer obscurities, but "Soundtracks From the Verve Hi-Fi" should serve as a strong reminder that we shouldn't take for granted the wonderful records that are either collecting the heavy dust of sinful neglect on our shelves at home, or sit right under our noses as we continually flip right by them with each visit to our favorite record stores. More importantly this compilation is, most simply put, a great listen. And somehow, I have a feeling you'll be hearing this one playing in every swank clothing store in the Metro D.C. area within weeks if not days.
