A Black/Death Metal sextet from Oulu, founded during 1995 by guitarist Riku Hopeakoski and singer Mika Tönning, the former also active with UNWRAP. The group took on the title CATAMENIA ("Menstration flow") simply for the sound of the word, unaware of its meaning. Opening demos included a three song 1995 session and follow up 'Winds' in 1996. The group signed with Germany's Massacre Records and set about recording their debut in September 1997. CATAMENIA opened their commercial account in January 1998 with the release of the debut album, 'Halls Of Frozen North', produced by Gerhard Magin at Commusication Studios in Beindersheim, Germany. The band at this juncture comprised singer Mika Tönning, guitarists Riku Hopeakoski and Sampo Ukkola, bass player Timo Lehtinen, the DOLORIAN credited keyboard player Heidi Riihinen with Toni Tervo on the drums.
Following the issue of the Tomas Skogsberg produced January 1999 album 'Morning Crimson', cut at Sunlight studios in Stockholm and which would see ATROCITY vocalist Alex Krull lending his talents in the studio on backing vocals, CATAMENIA underwent some upheaval with the departure of both guitarist Sampo Ukkola and drummer Toni Tervo. Replacements would be found in the form of Ari 'WarTechs' Nissilä on guitar, a member of UNWRAP, and occupying the drum stool, none other than Sir Luttinen of IMPALED NAZARENE and LEGENDA.
The band got back to business with a third album for Massacre, issued in August 2000 and entitled 'Eternal Winter's Prophecy', recorded at Tico-Tico Studios with producer Ahti Kortelainen. In September 2001 yet more ructions assailed the line-up as Sir Luttinen and keyboard player Heidi Riihinen decamped. New man on the drums would turn out to be Janne Kusmin, also a member of WRATHAGE, KALMAH and SOULHAMMER. Newly installed on keyboards would be Tero Nevala, a scene veteran of BLODSOFFER, DEAD MAN'S GRIP, DOROTHA, as 'Syvämetsän Saatana', NATIONAL NAPALM SYNDICATE and WRATHAGE.
CATAMENIA crafted the 'Eskhata' album at at SoundMix Studios with producer Mika Pohjola. Upon completion of this record, which arrived in stores during April 2002, the band renewed its contract to Massacre Records for a further three albums, commencing with February 2003's 'ChaosBorn', laid down at Neo Studio in Oulu with Kari Vähäkuopus and Immu Ilmarinen manning the production desk. Installed on drums for these sessions was Veikko 'Moottorisaha' Jumisko with guest vocals courtesy of Kakke Vähäkuopus.
The band underwent a line-up change in December 2004, bassist Timo Lehtinen exiting in favour of Mikko Hepo-oja, another UNWRAP member. Shortly afterward Mika Tönning also decamped. CATAMENIA's 2005 album 'Winternight Tragedies', seeing vocals from Ole-Jukka Mustonen and WarTechs, included a cover version of SATYRICON's 'Fuel For Hatred'. Mustonen's prior credentials included membership of DOROTHA, as 'Verisperma the Necrophile', and WRATHAGE. Female session vocals came courtesy of Nevala's girlfriend Heidi Sainio. Yet another change then marked the introduction of the BURNING POINT and BLACK SWAN credited Toni Kansanoja on bass.
CATAMENIA returned in August 2006 with 'Location: COLD'. This album, closing with a cover version of W.A.S.P.'s ' I Wanna Be Somebody', was recorded at Mastervox Studios and produced by Vähäkuopus and Immu Ilmarinen once again. The group roster changed in the studio as Olli-Jukka Mustonen was forced to stand down due to throat problems. In his stead the group utilised Antti Haapsamo from MORS SUBITA, CATALEPTIC and SEMENTII for much of the vocal work.
