Overview: For a long time, the only real notable figure(s) to hail from Bradenton, Florida was the Atlanta Braves’ future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones; add the band Since October to that list. The foursome might be a fresh face to the national market, but the band was stirring down in the Sunshine State for a few years before signing with Tooth and Nail. Since October performed with other notable Christian rock acts including Pillar, Seventh Day Slumber, and Decyfer Down, moving a sizable number of copies of their self-released EP in the process. With a record label behind them, Since October wrote and recorded a full-length release, entitled ‘This Is My Heart‘. The band is currently on tour in support of the record’s recent street date.
The Good: ‘This Is My Heart‘ is an extremely beneficial album for Since October, because it justifiably separates the band from any “run of the mill emo/screamo” disposition that may be assumedly tagged to them before the music even strikes a note. Once the fleeting intro “Emily” dissolves, Since October will turn your head in a flash with the Tool-esque bass line that opens “My Heart”, which no sooner jets into a blasting dose of visceral screams, chugging guitars, and cutting drums. “My Heart” uses the pre-chorus to take a breather, but the band just lets the music flow, not at all sounding like a ProTools collage. The multi-dimensional “Disaster” is a wholesome track that highlights Since October utilizing spastic spurts of high impact energy to help accentuate, segue into another part, or reinforce a previous section. “In This Moment” is an introspective and colorful joint that, despite its “ready for in-store play at Hollister” sound, is undeniably soaked in catchiness; you may just find yourself repeating the song even after you swore it off. Without sounding pretentious or borrowed, “Guilty” is thunderous and cataclysmic in all the right places, similar to the maturity and control Since October flashed in “Disaster”. The guitars in the rugged “World to Me” are cranked to offer a meatier, more palpable sound, but the careful, swing-inspired drumwork of its bridge is the real prizewinner. “Live to Die” is one of the most lively and rousing cuts on ‘This Is My Heart‘, and Since October turn a simple, carefree song in “Follow You Down” and pitch it as a modest encapsulation of the album’s progress to that point. Whimsical and introspective is what “Waiting” is all about, a bomb about to explode with potential for crossover success. Since October starts off “Everything” with a bang, setting it up to be a ravenous, scream-addled tirade. Just as you would have expected, Since October takes off running, but stops at the cliff’s edge and throws the song’s early premonitions over the edge; instead, “Everything” turns out to be a zippy and zesty little number. ‘This Is My Heart‘ beats for a final time with the hulky “Part of Me”, which sweeps everything together nicely.
The Bad: ‘This Is My Heart‘ sounds off. Not off in regards to the band’s timing or cohesiveness, but the general sound of the album on the whole. To me, the production of ‘This Is My Heart‘ is minor league, an unexpected exception to a Tooth and Nail catalogue known for its sleek, smooth albums. Although the rawness I alluded to might sound like a breath of fresh air for said catalogue, it instead stifles Since October’s sound on numerous occasions; unfortunately for the band, this is a rash that spreads. Often times, it sounds like front-man Ben Graham ran around the studio and screamed into the microphone at all different angles and volumes. The drums suffer the most, with the most punctual of fills or grooves feeling groggy and disjointed. Despite Since October’s craftsmanship and obvious penchant for music, their dynamics are lackluster, failing to grow upon their proudest moments, like the flawlessly calculated frenzies of “Disaster” that wind up as only Sugar Babies when they could have been Sugar Daddies.
