It looks like we have brand new style of "Rock" discovered in America. California group named "Never Wasn't" had just celebrated their début with an album which as it should and usually happens with the first album, bears the name of the group. The group "Never Wasn't" consists of five musicians: Mike Matier (g), Richard "Snake" Zusman (bg), Grant Cooper (k), Ronny Lapine (v) and on percussion, an artist whose name sounds familiar (to Polish nationals), Jeff Koza.
Album consists of 13 compositions that run between 4-6 minutes. It is clearly distinguishable that the "Never Wasn't" group's music is inspired by Genesis, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Rush, Kansas, Styx, and by the newer era performers like The Flower Kings and Spock's Beard. "Never Wasn't" artists often reach beyond musical effects i.e. Cookoo clock bird in the "Timeline" or echoes from the boot camp in the "No More War" and link their composition with classics, adding progress and unique style filled with abundance of colors typical to "American Rock".
Although it is too early to say that "Never Wasn't" music will "move the mountains" however, it is clear that the group has great basis to build upon. You can hear and feel the joy of playing (performing), honesty of expression; you can hear the music coming alive and victory of artistic honesty with not overly exaggerated or overdone production. It appears that this American group made a first step that is a definitely a success. They started something what has a chance to grow and develop better and better as a new direction in the musical form.
From among the compositions of the album "Never Wasn't", a particular attention deserves "Changing Seasons", "Take a Moment", "Leprechaun" and "Undertow". These are the four musical pearls that shine among remaining nine equally very interesting and successful compositions.
