HinweiseGenre : Country Rock
Country : USA
Year : 2008
There's nothing flashy about Reckless Kelly, no gimmicks or ridiculous rock-star posturing -- just arrow-straight country-rock songs that get better with every album the Texas band records.
The group's latest, "Bulletproof" (Yep Roc), picks up where 2005's "Wicked Twisted Road" left off, with songs about loving and life on the road. There's also a flash of political consciousness on "American Blood" -- the result, perhaps, of hanging out with troubadour-agitator Steve Earle a few years ago while collaborating on songs for various tribute albums?
Either way, the band adds its voice to the swollen chorus of disillusionment over the mishandling of the war in Iraq. It's just one facet of "Bulletproof," however: There's also heartbreak on "Don't Say Goodbye," breaking hearts on "Passin' Through," a scornful kiss-off on "How Was California?" and the musical equivalent of a raffish grin on "A Guy Like Me."
Front man Willy Braun sings with a hint of twang that sometimes verges on lonesome, and his brother Cody chimes in with sweet harmonies the way only siblings can.
Most of the songs are built around propulsive drumming from Jay Nazziola, a Simsbury native. His steady, chugging rhythm anchors full-throated guitars on up-tempo rockers like "Ragged as the Road," and he lays back as fiddle takes over on the waltz-time ballad "I Never Had a Chance."
The cover art -- featuring an approximation of the homemade armor worn by the band's namesake, Australian outlaw Ned Kelly -- describes the music within as "fearless & action packed." That's as good a description as any, though it overlooks another of the band's qualities: Reckless Kelly has a lot of heart.
