Mainly instrumental albums by MEGADETH and former HAWAII and CACOPHONY guitarist virtuoso Marty Friedman displaying the guitarists inventiveness and penchant for Japanese and Arabian scales. The 'Dragon's kiss' album includes his former CACOPHONY colleagues guitarist JASON BECKER and ex-WILD DOGS drummer Deen Castronovo.
'True Obsessions' album features both Greg Bissonette, previously with DAVID LEE ROTH, and veteran ex-VANILLA FUDGE, CACTUS, KGB and KING KOBRA man CARMINE APPICE on drums, whilst the bass parts are supplied by MEGADETH colleague Nick Menza.
The album is also unusual in that it's the first of Friedman's solo efforts to feature vocals, although Friedman subcontracted the work out to Stanley Rose and NIGHTRANGER's Jesse Bradman. The album also marked a more melodic approach by Friedman to his solo work and was written whilst Marty was out with MEGADETH on the 'Youthanasia' tour.
After a high profile run of gold and platinum albums Friedman left MEGADETH in 2000. He would guest on the 2001 tribute album in honour of his erstwhile CACOPHONY band mate JASON BECKER entitled 'Warmth In The Wilderness'. The guitarist finally re-emerged touting his new project RED DYE #2 in October.
Friedman would session on the Progressive Rock tour de force EXPLORERS CLUB album 'Raising The Mammoth' in 2002. During June of that same year fans of both Friedman and MEGADETH would be relieved to learn of a fresh band project. With MEGADETH having dissolved only weeks before with the retirement of frontman Dave Mustaine the MEGADETH alumni of Friedman, his replacement in MEGADETH Al Pitrelli, bassist David Ellefson and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso revealed a new band union and were on the search for a lead vocalist.
The guitarist rejoined his former DEUCE colleagues for a much publicised reunion show. He also completed work on a new studio album 'Music For Speeding' in the latter half of the year, scoring record deals with Universal Records in Japan, STEVE VAI's Favored Nations in the U.S. and Mascot Records for Europe.
The erstwhile MEGADETH Friedman / Ellefson / DeGrasso axis would unite for road work in early 2003 in support of the guitarist's 'Music For Speeding' solo album. During the summer Friedman hooked up with Japanese Rock diva AIKAWA NANASE for touring and recording.
Friedman teamed up ex-TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick's Jazz based ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO and another erstwhile MEGADETH man Chris Poland's OHM band for a September 2003 'Guitarevolution' tour of North America. Friedman's band for the occasion would prove noteworthy, comprising WATCHTOWER and SPASTIC INK guitarist Ron Jarzombek, the RAZOR and WARDOG credited bass player Chris Catero and his former MEGADETH colleague drummer Jimmy DeGrasso. This same band unit re-convened for an appearance at the June 2004 'World Guitar Congress' held in Baltimore, Maryland. The guitarist also made time to contribute a guest guitar solo to 2004 recording's from FIREWIND.
The guitarist undertook further recording with AIKAWA NANASE, also putting in live dates in Japan as part of her band in September. He returneed for two solos shows that November, employing a band comprising Masaki of ANIMETAL on bass and ex-SIAM SHADE man Jun-Ji on drums. For the 10th October Osaka show he would also be joined by guest John Petrucci from DREAM THEATER.
Friedman's work in Japan continued apace in 2005, the guitarist forming up a live band alongside X's Tomoaki Ishizuka to back Pop diva Aikawa Nanase in July. In August he would put on a rare solo performance at the South Korean 'Busan Rock' festival. His backing band for this event comprised WATCHTOWER guitarist Ron Jarzombek, ANIMETAL and CANTA bassist Masaki and GACKT drummer Ryuichi Nishida.
Friedman's July 2006 album 'Loudspeaker', issued through Mascot Records, featured guests BILLY SHEEHAN, STEVE VAI and John Petrucci.
