From the intense opening chords and haunting first vocals of “It’s Over” I knew it was love at first listen. “Obsession, depression, this program is in session” the song unfolds telling a story, the story of Nick Black.
Who is Nick Black you ask? Quite possibly your favorite new band that’s who. Appearing from thin air almost quite literally Nick Black has launched an online assault that has gained them adoring fans worldwide, with the ever so popular MySpace and You Tube providing a strong backbone for the band... Oh did I forget to mention the endless attention NB gives each of his fans? It sure isn’t a bad way to help sell CD’s.
NB’s debut CD ‘HOLLOW’ is simply a musical masterpiece. Vocalist Nick Black oozes sex appeal as he equally delivers each song with a passionate fervor and lyrical insight that sucks you in. "Fall to Pieces" is laced with raspy vocals, rock solid guitar rhythms and a chorus that sticks like elmers (glue that is).. Another radio ready and noteworthy track (ok who am I kidding they are ALL noteworthy at this point) is “Something Real,” with an up-tempo beat and haunting harmonies.
Amazingly, three songs into the disc I can’t pin-point who the band reminds me of before I realize NO ONE. Nick Black has a sound uniquely all their own. While some influences are subtlety detected it’s impressive to note this band definitely has a feel that’s fresh, edgy and well to be quite honest... addictive.
The hard rockin, gritty first single "Sorry," is laced with words reminiscent of the shit hand we all get dealt from time to time: Broken, fall and stand up for yourself. Ah yes. I like the way we are running with this..it really is more of an attitude and the music helps you realize it, as a matter of fact it demands it. "I'm not sorry anymore for the way I was before..and as far as I'm concerned I'd say we're even." Can I get a hell yeah?
From the impressive cover of Heart's "Barracuda" to the heavy and unabashedly in your face chords of "Let You Go" I just can't get enough and the CD is only half way though its track listing!
The one ballad and final track on the disc is "Hollow." Fueled by an acoustic guitar and an exquisite orchestration that is powerful and comforting at the same time, Nick's breathy and intimately heartfelt words cut to the core and so the story ends.
It's rare to find a band that can deliver a disc chock full of hit songs, songs that make you FEEL, songs you can RELATE to, songs that just down right rock. In this case, HOLLOW is that such CD. Delivered with relentless conviction, each track seamlessly flows into the next all the while painting an aural soundscape for your enjoyment. This band is a force to be reckoned with so move over and make way Nick Black are staging a revolution.
