You're a band mate of Rob Zombie's when he decides to temporarily set aside music for film - what do you do? If you're guitarist Mike Riggs, you found your own band with fellow Zombie drummer John Tempesta. And for a name? Scum of the Earth, which happens to be a song off the Zombie album, The Sinister Urge. The band has now released two albums, with Sleaze Freak coming nearly three years to date after their debut album, Blah...Blah...Blah...Love Songs for the New Millenium.
The debut was decent, but Sleaze Freak doesn't go above and beyond. Generously speaking, it's just as good, if not slightly disappointing. The first thing you'll notice about Scum of the Earth is the obvious similarity to Rob Zombie - the vocals and guitars, both performed by Riggs, are practically the same. Don't be quick to label the band a rip-off, though. This is the style of Riggs, whether he's alongside Rob Zombie or not.
Scum of the Earth's sophomore effort once again delivers ghoulish and deathly songs, some of which are catchy and some of which are heavy - but strangely not both. It's fair to compare the sound of this album to Dope (Felons and Revolutionaries in particular) or Ministry. The guitar riffs and character of the vocals (as well as synthesizers?) are most comparable. However, in a nutshell, these songs are essentially watered-down Zombie songs.
