Named by AGNOSTIC FRONT's Vinnie Stigma, New York Hardcore crew MADBALL, founded in 1989, was fronted by AGNOSTIC FRONT's Roger Miret's younger brother Freddy Cricien. Most of AGNOSTIC FRONT supply the music for the debut single 'Ball Of Destruction'. Stigma and drummer Will Sheplar were retained for the follow up 'Droppin' Many Suckers'. In 1995 the band added drummer Walter Ryan, formerly of POSSESSED and stand in member for MACHINE HEAD.
In 1998 Sheplar founded FLOOD in alliance with guitarist Scott Roberts of THE SPUDMONSTERS, vocalist Robb Brock and DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN bassist Jeff Wood. Minus Wood, whose position was taken by LIFE OF AGONY veteran Alan Roberts, FLOOD evolved into AMONG THIEVES. Cricien guested on fellow New York Hardcore merchant's H2O's 1999 'F.T.T.W.' album. He would also contribute to the SON OF SKAM project.
MADBALL's tour plans for 2000 on a package billing with CANDIRA and SHADOWS FALL were scuppered when just in advance of the shows MADBALL decided to fold. Former MADBALL drummer Walter Ryan would leave to join Oakland Hardcore act POWERHOUSE. The band announced a reformation in October of 2002, scheduling their come back show at Krome in South Amboy, New Jersey for December 6th appearing on a billing with MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD, DEATH THREAT and NO WARNING. Meantime, the MADBALL duo of singer Freddy Cricien and bassist Hoya Roc united with H20 frontman Toby Morse and NEW FOUND GLORY guitarist Chad Gilbert in a fresh band project ALL AGES. This band, enrolling BOX CAR RACER man David Kennedy and the CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS and SHELTER credited drummer Mackie Jayson, would subsequently switch to HAZEN STREET, recording a Howard Benson produced debut album for the D.C. Flag label owned by Benji and Joel Madden of GOOD CHARLOTTE.
MADBALL toured alongside DEATH THREAT for August 2003 US dates. A further lengthy run of shows saw the band, comprising Freddy Cricien, the SKARHEAD and RAG MEN credited Mitts on guitar, bass player Hoya and SKARHEAD, ex-HATEBREED man Rigg Ross on drums, united with HATEBREED, HATE ETERNAL, TERROR and CEPHALIC CARNAGE for the North American 'Rise Of Brutality' tour commencing 10th September.
Signing to Ferret Records in 2005, MADBALL, comprising vocalist Freddy Cricien, bassist Hoya, guitarist Mitts and drummer Rigg Ross, filmed a promotional video for the track 'HeavensHell', from the Zeuss produced 'Legacy' album, with director Dale "Rage" Resteghini in early June. The Summer of 2005 found the group participating in the US 'Sounds of the Underground' touring extravaganza, a collaboration between independent labels Ferret Music, Prosthetic Records, Trustkill Records and Metal Blade Records. The mammoth billing for these shows saw the band sharing stages with CLUTCH, OPETH, POISON THE WELL, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES, CHIMAIRA, NORMA JEAN, EVERY TIME I DIE, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THROWDOWN, HIGH ON FIRE, DEVILDRIVER, ALL THAT REMAINS, A LIFE ONCE LOST and UNEARTH. Subsequent headline dates throughout September, following an appearance at the Trenton, New Jersey 'Hellfest', had MADBALL topping a bill with support from WALLS OF JERICHO, MISERY SIGNALS and FULL BLOWN CHAOS. Gigs across Europe throughout October and December witnessed a three band alliance with SWORN ENEMY and SINCE THE FLOOD. Returning to the USA, MADBALL closed the year on a Winter run alongside AS I LAY DYING, NORMA JEAN and A LIFE ONCE LOST.
The 'Under The Gun' tour of the USA would be announced for April 2006, the group hooking up with REMEMBERING NEVER, ZAO, SCARLET and THE BANNER for this run. Crossing the Atlantic, the band alongside CHIMAIRA, UNEARTH, TERROR, ALL THAT REMAINS and MANNTIS teamed up for the European edition of the 'Sounds of the Underground' tour, commencing May 10th in Manchester, England.
