Copenhagen Power Metal act MANTICORA’s roots lay in the dissolution of FEAR ITSELF in 1996. Erstwhile FEAR ITSELF members vocalist Lars F. Larsen and guitarist Kristian H. Larsen teamed up with former RIP N’ TEAR and HUMAN FACTOR drummer Mads Volf and ex-SCARECROWS bassist Rene S. Nielsen. Initially the band titled itself as MANTICORE. Still billed as MANTICORE, the group issued the 1997 EP 'Dead End Solution'. Signing to Greek label Black Lotus the band subtly changed title to MANTICORA for the 1999 album 'Roots Of Eternity'.
MANTICORA added keyboard player Jeppe Eg for the April 2001 album ‘Darkness With Tales To Tell’, released by the Italian Scarlet label. The man had earlier performed live with BLAZING ETERNITY. Upon the album release the band integrated bass-player Kasper Gram, previously with WUTHERING HEIGHTS, as well as a new lead guitarist, Martin Arendal. The band would return in 2002, touting a Jacob Hansen produced album 'Hyperion', a concept outing inspired by the science fiction novel of Dan Simmons. Jeppe Eg joined melodic Death Metal band URKRAFT in 2002.
Gram would form up part of the 2004 Heavy Metal project EVIL MASQUERADE, the 'Welcome To The Show' album fronted by original ROYAL HUNT vocalist Henrik Brockmann and including guitarist Henrik Flyman of MOAHNA MOAHNI, ZOOL and WUTHERING HEIGHTS and drummer Dennis Buhl of SINPHONIA.
MANTICORA recordings in early 2004 for a new album '8 Deadly Sins', cut at Jailhouse Studios in Horsens, Denmark, utilised the services of Finn Zierler of BEYOND TWILIGHT on keyboards. In June the band announced it had signed to the German Massacre label for Europe and Nightmare Records in the USA. Hellion Records took the album on for South America. Japanese versions of '8 Deadly Sins' added the bonus track 'My Private Hell'.
2005 European dates found MANTICORA forming up a package billing with ANGRA and EDENBRIDGE. However, both guitarist Martin Arendal and keyboard player Finn Zierler would be unable to commit to these dates and were replaced by Stefan Johansson and Andreas Lindahl of PLATITUDE respectively. The first triumvirate of MANTICORA albums, all remixed by Andy Horn in 'Roots Of Eternity' from 1999, 'Darkness With Tales To Tell' from 2001 and 'Hyperion' dating to 2002, saw re-issue in late May through German label Massacre Records for Europe, in France by Replica Records and in North America by Nightmare Records.
MANTICORA opened 2006 with a line-up change, parting ways with guitarist Stefan Johansson and duly re-drafting former member Martin Arendal as replacement. The group utilised Jailhouse studios in Horsens to craft a new album, 'The Black Circus Part 1 - Letters', with producer Tommy Hansen. As 2007 was ushered in, MANTICORA, having signed with Locomotive Music, entered the studio to begin recording their sixth full-length album, 'The Black Circus, Part 2'. The band contributed their cover version of TANKARD's 'Total Addiction' to the tribute album 'A Tribute To Tankard' included as a bonus disc on the AFM Records 2007 TANKARD release 'Best Case Scenario: 25 Years In Beers'.
