Jiri Valter (vocals / bass), Dan Janacek (guitar), Rene Kostelnak (drums)
Premier blasphemous Death Metal act ROOT, then just a founding duo of vocalist Big Boss (a.k.a. Jiri Valter) and guitarist Blackie, debuted with the 1987 demo cassette 'Reap Of Hell'. The band, hailing from Brno, debuted live in September 1988 and subsequently issued two further demos 'War Of Rats' and 'Messengers From Darkness', all three of these sessions seeing Big Boss manning the drums. Vocalist Dr. Fé (a.k.a. Zelezo) was sacked in 1989, founding Black Metal band AMON. Signing to Zera Records the group's first album, 'Zjeveni', was delivered in 1991. ROOT gained further exposure by including their version of the Czech folk song 'Hrbitov' to the compilation album 'Death Metal Session'.
ROOT's sophomore outing, entitled 'Hell Symphony' and their first English language attempt, spread word into Europe as the British Cacophonous label picked the album up for distribution. Switching to Monitor Records the 'The Temple In The Underworld' album, promoted with a video to the song 'Aposiopesis', arrived in 1993. Internal disputes would put the band on hiatus until a 1996 comeback with the conceptual 'Kargeras'.
Redblack Records released ROOT's fifth album 'The Book' in 1999, also re-releasing the debut 'Zjeveni' with the additional track 'Hrbitov'. Both 'Hell Symphony' and 'Kargeras' were given the re-issue treatment to, adding extra live tracks to each. ROOT showed no signs of slowing down in 2001 in spite of the fact that Big Boss celebrated his 50th birthday. In late 2002 ROOT' Big Black alongside guitarist Ashok, bassist Igor and ONSET keyboard player Tudy formulated the EQUIRHODONT side project for an album release through Shindy Productions. Meantime Blackie busied himself with his other band projects CALES and ENTRAILS.
A collection of ROOT's formative demos surfaced on CD in early 2003 billed as 'Dema'. ROOT, still maintaining an active gig schedule throughout the year with gigs across Germany and Serbia, projected an album for Autumn of 2003 provisionally billed as 'Madness Of The Graves'. The band line up at this juncture comprised vocalist Big Boss, guitarists Blackie and Ashok, bass player Igor and drummer Evil.
Monster Nation issued the 'Capturing Sweden - Live in Falkenberg' concert recordings in November 2005. Captured at the 2001 '2 Heavy 4 You' festival', only 500 copies were manufactured.
In early 2006 Big Boss' services were requested as guest vocalist on the Norwegian Viking Metal band HELHEIM's album 'The Journeys And Experiences Of Death'. A ROOT EP issued in May that year, 'Casilda' on Shindy Productions included cover versions of THE BEATLES 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and JIMI HENDRIX's 'Little Wing'.
The band was added to the 2007 European tour commencing March 31st at Planet Music in Vienna, Austria featuring MOONSPELL, NAPALM DEATH, BEHEMOTH and DEW-SCENTED.
