A porn star runs for governor of California. Face it, folks, we're getting desensitized to the erotic because of the countless asinine intrusions of sterile, puerile and utterly stupid sexploits.

The Lords of Acid's 10-year anniversary retrospective, Greatest Tits, reminds us that the chain between erotica and rock'n'roll hasnt been completely shattered by a legion of PG-13 pop stars. Collecting 15 tracks from the band?s ribald history, this compilation piles on the sexy industrial/dance cuts that not only give rock music the nasty edge it's missed for a while, but also show that, years after the fact, many of the Lords songs stand up surprisingly well.

Always geared for club play, Lords of Acid's output varies from the guitar and vocal dominated I Sit On Acid and Rubber Doll to tracks filled with heavy dance grooves and sparse vocals such as Lover. The former almost always fare better than the latter: Whether the band lays down industrial-dance grooves that don?t need to be put on life support once they're removed from the dance floor (Rough Sex) or pens or breaks into the Jamaican dub bag of tricks to find a strange, but workable hybrid, between American club anthems and Caribbean classics (Marijuana in our Brain), The Lords hung their songs on adult themes, but weren?t bound to them for survival: Strip all the sexual references and lust from a Lords track, and the band still has enough depth to survive. Of course, there are a few black eyes on this record, from the clumsy 2-Live-Crew-meets-Sapho burst of bawdy early 90s rap over similarly clumsy beats (Pussy), and the pervsion of the classic Loved By You chorus is the only thing that holds together an otherwise totally scatterbrained effort (Scrood Bi U).

The Lords of Acid won't ever make the shot list of industrial/dance luminaries - it's still impossible to totally escape the band's cartoonish, overblown sexuality even when listeners are generous - but Greatest Tits is still a reminder that despite the airbrushing, the double entendres and half measures, rock can still be dirty, sticky, and, for the most part, fun.
