HinweiseKill Your Darlings is the first release of original material from the Parisian author/DJ/composer since Grand Love Story in 1998. Since then Kid Loco has set up his Royal Belleville label and worked on various projects including a cracking DJ Kicks compilation and remixes for Pulp, Talvin Singh and Mogwai. More recently he produced Departure Lounge's album Too Late to Die Young; a collaboration leading to vocalist Tim Keegan guesting on Kill Your Darlings along with Glaswegian singer Louise Quinn. And there's a clue to the content of the album. The dubby, cinematic trip-hop he's known for is still lurking, but it's an album of more traditional 'real songs' even echoing Lou Reed and Serge Gainsbourg at times. Drifting acoustic strummings, folky, bluesy, riffs work well with the vocals and cheeky numbers like Three Feet High Reefer are quite fun but somehow it fails to live up to the concept - Kid Loco doing proper songs.
